What is meant by drama-in-role?
In the context of the drama, pupils take on and sustain appropriate roles/characters such as soldiers, workhouse children, architects, etc.
What areas of the curriculum can be explored using this technique?
The technique can be applied to virtually any area of the curriculum teachers see fit. Naturally, work varies depending on the topic required. For example, exploring the Trenches of WW1 may require a focused 3 hour session, whereas another topic may require a longer period of time.
What is the purpose of the workshops?
The aim of the workshops is to give students a sense of empowerment and authority, and in so doing help them to understand the topic.
What is the length of a workshop?
How long is a piece of string! This is dictated to by the children's availability, their level and the subject being examined however for a consolidated, and sustained drama, a minimum of three hours is recommended, but this can of course be altered. However, for a more in depth look at a topic, in which the drama could be occasionally dropped, a week could be used, with a couple of hours each day. This is entirely negotiable.
What resources are required?
We believe that to help pupils immerse themselves in the experience, it is essential they use accurate props, costumes and set. This may mean turning a section of a school hall into a trench, or simply placing appropriate props in suitable locations. Resources can be supplied by the school, or the company but expenditure of hiring, purchasing props etc will be in addition to the workshop costs. No hiring/purchase would be made without express consent from the school.
Which practitioners do you follow?
Although our approach bears similarity to the famous work of Dorothy Heathcote, who practiced a technique called 'Mantle of the Expert,' we are more focused on the idea of sustaining a drama through an ongoing role or character.
What age groups is this intended for?
Ideally this type of workshop is aimed at Year 7 and Year 8 pupils. Simpler workshops can be adapted for younger pupils.
What are the prices of workshops?
Prices for workshops begin at £250 for 3 hours and costs for lengthier workshops will be made under negotiation. 2 B Theatre however wishes above all to educate, and as a result we are entirely negotiable on cost.
